Community of Haifa: History

Our monastery, situated above Mount Carmel, was founded on January 1, 1892, by eight Carmelite nuns from France.

An unbroken thread unites us to the Teresian foundation of Malagón: Genoa, Avignon, Ecully, and Mount Carmel.

Its origin was deeply rooted in the heart of our holy Mother Teresa when the Holy Spirit inspired her to found some dovecots of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel where one lived the primitive Rule as she called it by imitating the holy prophets who lived near the spring of Elijah. It is an invitation for the Carmelites of Mount Carmel today like those of yesterday.

We feel we are contemporaries of the first Carmelites who lived in obedience to Jesus Christ on this holy mountain.

At present our community has 21 sisters from 12 different nations: Israel, Italy, Egypt, France, Korea, Japan, Croatia, Chile, Brazil, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Peru.
