Mariam Baouardy was born on 5 January 1846, in Abellin, a modest village on a hill in Galilee, halfway between Nazareth and Haifa. She was a contemporary of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, who was 3 years old when Mariam died. There was a difference of 27 years between them, (as between Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross). Both of them were to transmit to us the same gospel message of spiritual childhood: of a humility full of love, of complete confidence, of bold surrender into the hands of our Father in Heaven. But each followed different paths, carrying the mark of the world that shaped them: the West for Therese, the Orient for Mariam.
